  CRAFTS

 SOAP BIBLE

Felt (black and gold/yellow)        Soap bar              Glue

Ribbon for sides of soap (gold or yellow)
Get your bar of soap, cut the felt to cover front, one side of bar, and the back.

Glue it to the bar of soap. If you use black felt it will look almost like a bible.

Take your ribbon, glue it to the edges of soap bar that is visible (3 sides).

Cut out the letters BIBLE from gold or yellow felt and glue to the front of your "Bible". Or you may use craft paint. The main piece of felt should be one piece to fold over the soap.

This craft is excellent for all ages.

 Edible Jewellery.

This is a very creative and fun way to play with your food!

You will need shoe string liquorice (not the rope style, as the liquorice will

be the string) and goodies that have some sort of hole in them.

e.g. Cheerio’s, pretzels, gummy lifesavers, mini donuts & dried applerings.

String the items along the liquorice 'thread' and tie the two ends together. You can make necklaces and bracelets!

   Paper Mosaic

You need various different colours of paper - you can use plain, wrapping paper, magazine paper, foil paper, textured paper...any paper you think will create an interesting effect!

Cut the paper into strips about 5cm wide and then cut the strips so that you have

lots of little squares.

Don't worry about being too accurate since this adds to the effect.

Choose a background paper (we used construction paper) and plan your design.

You can make light pencil marks & make it as simple or complicated as you like -

if you have any curves you will have to cut your squares into smaller pieces to fit.

When your picture is finished you may want to protect it by laminating it.

These make wonderful place mats!

 Potato Face

Supplies needed:

A brown paper grocery bag (or brown construction paper)

Various colours of construction paper, scissors, pencil & glue

Using the brown paper bag (or brown construction paper), cut out potato shape - at least as big as your hand.

Cut out the eyes (the whites plus the darker inner part), a nose, a mouth, hair, a bowtie, and any other desired features from the coloured paper.

Glue the features onto the brown paper potato head.

    Easy Stained Glass Craft

Need: coffee filter, washable markers, spray bottle (with water), construction paper & clear contact paper (optional)

Directions:

Take a coffee filter and let the children colour on it with different colours of washable markers.

Then let them spray it with water from a squirt bottle.

Cut a cross (or whatever shape you would like) out of construction paper

Glue the 'painted' filter to the back

OPTIONAL:  Cover with contact paper.

It’s really pretty. You can do this with any design you want.

    Popsicle Stick Photo Frame

Heavy Paper    4 Popsicle Sticks      Scissors         Tape

Glue  Yarn        Glitter Glue      Paint        Markers     photo

Instructions:

Tape or glue the back of your photo to a piece of heavy paper.

Stack the Popsicle sticks into a square frame shape & glue the corners.

Glue a piece of yarn to the frame as a hanger.

Decorate your frame with glitter glue, paint or markers.

 "Thankful For" book

Need: construction paper, markers, scissors & a stapler

Have children trace their hands (on light card would be best)and have

them cut them out.

They can write their name and what they are thankful for on it.

Put all the hands together and staple to make a book.

optional - you can also punch a hole at the top of each one and thread

string through to make a banner and hang!

Another idea from the ideabox :)

The Ultimate Paperweight:

Supply each child with some modelling clay.

Let them shape it however they wish.

Let them add marbles, buttons, glitter, sand, pebbles, string, whatever you can think of.

After it dries it's a paperweight

Craft Project Tips

Candles - Use a piece of dry spaghetti to light those hard to reach candles or the ones where the wick is so far down.

Candle Wax Removal - To get candle wax out of your candle cups, place in the freezer for a day and it will pop right out.

Crochet Hook Storage - Store crochet hooks in travel toothbrush holders.

Funnel - Cut the top off a 2 litre soda bottle to use as a funnel.

Glue - To thicken glue, place it in the freezer for half an hour.

Glue All Cap - If you lose the cap to your glue all, plug the hole with a push pin.

Hot Glue - Use a clay pot saucer to cradle the end of your hot glue gun. All the drippings are caught inside the saucer.

Hot Glue Burn Protection - If you put lotion on your hands before you hot glue something, the glue will not stick to your hands, preventing burns.

Hot Glue Mistake - You can correct a mistake that you did with hot glue by placing the object on wax paper and microwaving for 1 minute (remember...no metal in the microwave).

Moulds - Use the plastic, shaped packages that toys come in, such as specific tools, animals, etc.

Paint Brush Protection - Protect your paint brush bristles by storing them in small straws.

Paint Brush Storage - Put your paint brushes, bristles up, in Pringles, Oatmeal or similar cans/containers..

Paint Remover - Alcohol will remove dried paint from most fabrics. Just soak the area,

let sit for 15 to 20 minutes, and then wash out. Repeat if necessary. (This works with almost any paint, both acrylic and oil based.)

Paint Palette - Use the throw-away styrofoam trays that meat from a grocery stores comes in.

Paint Storage - For a quick lid to keep paint or mixed materials from drying out,

try stretching a shower cap over the container.

Pompoms - To tie the pompom together tightly, first wet the string or yarn.

Rubber Stamps - Make your own rubber stamp by cutting craft foam or a thick shoe innersole

and then glue it inside a baby food jar lid.

Scissors - Sharpen your scissors with the neck of a glass bottle. Slip one cutting side into

the bottle and then open and close the scissors like you're attempting to cut the bottle.

Scissors – Cleaning - If you get some glue (or anything sticky) on your scissors,

fingernail polish remover will take care of it.

Thumbtack Substitute - Instead of plain thumbtacks, decorate your bulletin board with large,

fancy buttons.

Glue them atop the round part of a thumbtack, allowing the glue to harden completely.

Yarn/Wool Storage - Cut the top off a 2 litre soda bottle and place a skein of yarn into it.
Slip the end of the yarn/wool up through the hole in the top you just cut off and then tape the top back in place on the lower portion of the bottle.

Great uses for vinegar:

HYGIENE:

In your bathwater. Add ½ cup of vinegar or so to warm bath water when bathing and get double benefits – softer skin and a cleaner bathtub with less work!

Hair Conditioner - vinegar makes a simple, inexpensive conditioner for your hair and helps remove the sticky stuff shampoo can leave behind. About a tablespoon.

Hair Cleanser Take 1 cup of vinegar and warm water into a large glass and use to rinse your hair after you shampoo. Vinegar adds highlights to brunette hair,

restores the acid mantel, and removes soap film and sebum oil.

Dandruff Treatment Simply pour a few Tablespoons of vinegar on your hair and massage into your scalp. Wait a few minutes, then rinse and wash hair like normal.

Try this for a few days until you see results.

Weight Loss. Vinegar naturally helps to remove fat from the body and help reduce your appetite - apple cider vinegar is especially good for this.

Drink some in a glass of water a few times a day, and add a little lemon or honey for a nicer flavour.

Cracked, dry skin. Smooth a little vinegar on dried skin to help it heal.

Clean dentures Soak dentures overnight in white vinegar then brush away tartar with a toothbrush and rinse with with water.

Facial spritzer: mix 1/2 apple cider vinegar and 1/2 water into a spray bottle. Refreshing!

Longer lasting pantyhose Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the rinse water when washing and your pantyhose will last longer!

Toenail Fungus Treatment Another use for vinegar.......Soak your feet in a strong solution of vinegar and water at least daily to get rid of toenail fungus

FOOD/COOKING:

Cheese Storage Cheese will last longer if you store it in a vinegar-soaked cloth.
Whiter Cauliflower Add a teaspoon or so of white vinegar to your cooking water while cooking cauliflower - it will retain a whiter colour.
Ketchup Only have a little ketchup left in the bottle? Add a bit of vinegar and give it a good shake and you'll have a bit more!
Boiling Eggs Add a bit of white vinegar to the water you're boiling your eggs in, and the shells won't crack.
Cooking Cabbage Add a bit of vinegar to the water you're cooking your cabbage in to remove that stinky cabbage smell.
Fluffier Meringues Add 1 teaspoon vinegar for every three egg whites and you'll have fluffier meringues.
Tenderize Meat Soak in vinegar over night.
Non-sticky Rice To cook rice without sticking, add a spoon full of vinegar in it.
Remove onion odours from skin Eliminate onion odour by rubbing vinegar on your

Disinfect/clean cutting boards Clean and disinfect wood cutting boards by wiping with full strength vinegar.
Make buttermilk Make buttermilk. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of milk and let it stand 5 minutes to thicken.
Potato Cooking Water Add 1 teaspoon to the water when you are boiling potatoes to avoid them going black.

Note this does not apply to potatoes that are freshly dug/new.

HEALTH:

Sore throat: Mix one teaspoon vinegar with a glass of water. Gargle with the mixture and then swallow.
Remove calluses Try soaking your feet in a combination of white vinegar and warm water nightly and watch your feet soften noticeably.
Sunburned skin Soak a washcloth in vinegar and gently apply it to skin for cool relief. Reapply as needed as it evaporates.

Vinegar also soothes the itch and irritation of bee stings!
Arthritis Tonic. Two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, several times a day.
Jellyfish Stings Dot the irritation with vinegar and relieve itching.
Sinus Infections and Head Colds Add 1/4 cup or more vinegar to the vaporizer.
Wart Removal Mix one part apple cider vinegar to one part glycerine into a lotion and apply daily to warts until they dissolve.
Upset stomach Drink two teaspoons apple cider vinegar in one cup water to soothe an upset stomach.
Mosquito bites Use a cotton ball to dab mosquito and other bug bites with vinegar straight from the bottle.

Craft & Hygene Recipes

Lavender Bubble Bath

bunch lavender
1 large bottle clear organic shampoo
5 drops lavender essential oil

Place the bunch of lavender head down in a clean, screw-top wide mouth jar.

You really only need the flowers, so cut off any long stalks.

Add the shampoo and the lavender oil.

Close the jar and place it on a sunny windowsill for two or three weeks, shaking occasionally. Strain the liquid and rebottle.

Herbal Milk Bath ( makes enough for 4 baths)
1 cup Cornstarch
1 cup Dry Milk Powder
2 teaspoons of your Favourite Herbs
Combine ingredients in food processor or blender. Add herbs and blend.
Directions for use: Add 1/cup of mixture to hot bath water

Bubble Recipe

9 tbsp liquid detergent
1 tbsp glycerine(will make the bubbles stronger and last longer)

Stir together carefully so that the mixture doesn’t froth up too much.

Tip the mixture into a large flat dish to allow a variety of bubble blowers to be used.

For homemade bubble blowers, try the following:

wire or plastic twisty ties bent into the required shape, blowers cut from the lids of plastic containers, cotton reels or other plastic tubes such as wool cones, plastic rings held with a string clip peg, your fingers!

Slime Recipe
1 cup soap flakes
4 cups hot water
Dissolve the soap flakes in the hot water in a large bowl or pail.
Add colour if desired and leave to stand for at least an hour. The resulting play material will froth up if beaten, pours easily and is extremely slimy to touch! It keeps very well.

  Gloop Recipe
 2 cups cornflour
1 cup cold water
Pour the cornflour into a bowl. Add the cold water slowly, stirring constantly and stop when the water is barely absorbed by the cornflour. The resulting solution is fascinating to play with. It can be scooped up with the fingers as a mouldable material, but flows like liquid back into the bowl. It will brush off clothing as a dry powder.

Coffee Ground Playdough

2 1/2 c. flour
2 1/2 c. used coffee grounds
1 1/2 c. salt
1 c. sand
up to 1 c. water

Mix coffee grounds, salt, and sand. Gradually stir in water until mixture holds together. Use as little water as possible to speed drying process. The more water you use, the longer it takes to dry. This recipe is good because when dry, the fossil looks like a rock.

BODY SCRUBS

Aunt Katie's Body Scrub

Honey 3/4 cup
Caster sugar 1 cup
Sea salt 1 cup
Jojoba oil 3ml
Fragrance oil 3ml (orange & ylang ylang are beautiful combined with the honey)

Pour honey into medium sized bowl, then add sugar and stir to combine.

Add the salt in increments, to adjust the consistency to your liking. When all ingredients combined

Brown Sugar and Lemon Scrub

A touch of lemon makes this scrub so refreshing!

1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon of kalamansi or lemon
1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil(vco)
1 tablespoon of honey

Mix brown sugar and salt,

then add kalamansi/lemon juice, coconut oil & honey

Mix well.

Ginger Cinnamon-Salt Body Scrub

This body scrub has the fresh, invigorating scents of both ginger and cinnamon!

1 cup sea salt
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 cup almond oil or olive oil

Mix all ingredients together, then gently rub over your damp skin (except your face) to slough off dry skin. Rinse with warm water.

Breakfast for your Skin - (Oatmeal & Brown Sugar Scrub)

Exfoliates and is very moisturizing but doesn't leave a greasy feeling.

Before you turn off your shower scoop a small handful of scrub into your hand.

Rub gently onto your skin. Rinse.

3/4 cup Brown Sugar
1/2 cup ground oatmeal (not instant)
1/4 cup pure honey
3/4 to 1 cup (or to total saturation)
Oil of choice - I use Jojoba, Grapeseed or Sweet Almond
1/4 tsp Essential or Fragrance oil of choice (optional) Vanilla works nicely.

Though this smells great on it's own.

Mix the brown sugar & oatmeal together in a large bowl. Now add the honey.

Drizzle the oil over the mix. Mix well. When all your mix is saturated and sinks to the bottom of the bowl and you have oil on top you're done. Add your essential oil or fragrance oil.

A six or eight ounce wide-mouthed jar works nicely. Spoon mixture in.
